Albuquerque offers excellent weather for travelers and visitors with more than 300 days of sunshine each year, which also means it’s an ideal place to live. If you’ve just moved into your new Albuquerque apartment and you’re interested in finding some great springtime activities, here’s a quick list of things to do that can get you started on a terrific spring season.
Everyone Needs to Ride the Sandia Peak Tram at Least Once
The Sandia Peak Tram is a constant lure for tourists, but it’s also an experience that every Albuquerque resident should enjoy at least once. The tram bears the distinction as the longest aerial tram on the continent, and you get to travel over some incredible mountain landscapes as you ascend to more than 10,300 feet in elevation.
According to Visit Albuquerque, the tram:
“In the distance, one can see the city, extinct volcanoes, deep, rugged canyons and more than 11,000 square miles on a clear day – a spectacular view!”
The tramway is 2.7 miles long to its peak, and it takes around 15 minutes to reach the top. You can combine a trip on the tramway with some hiking or bicycling adventures in the area. If you happen to visit when the snow still covers the upper elevations, you can visit the Sandia Peak Ski Area.
Albuquerque is Famous for Balloon Rides
Another activity that every resident of Albuquerque should try at least once is a ride in a hot air balloon. If you spend any time at all in Albuquerque, you soon realize that locals refer to the city as the Hot Air Balloon Capital of the World. There are a surprising number of hot air “balloonists” who take to the skies on a year-round basis, and it’s easy to book a ride with one of the local companies that take tourists up.
Some of the local hot air balloon companies include:
- Rainbow Ryders, Inc.
- World Balloon
- Above and Beyond
- Enchanted Winds Hot Air Balloon Company
- Private Balloon Flights, LLC
The official hot air balloon festival in Albuquerque isn’t until October, but you can enjoy these balloon rides at any time of the year and especially in the spring when the weather starts to become a little warmer.
Eat a Meal Outside
Patio dining is an excellent way to spend an unseasonably warm spring day, and it’s also a great way to spend time with friends during an evening under some outdoor lamps. Whether you’re meeting with friends at one of the city’s many wine bars or brewpubs, or you’re relaxing at one of Albuquerque’s outdoor cafes, the outdoors and food make an excellent pair in the spring.
If you’ve never tried it, you might try to track down one of the restaurants, cafes, or bakeries that sell the state’s official “state cookie,” which is called the Biscochito. It’s a delicious cookie made with ingredients like ground cinnamon, apple juice, anise seeds, and regular, old-fashioned flour. Some recipes even use brandy.
